SPORTING STYLE: ATHLETES AT FASHION WEEK IN NEW YORK

This season, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York happened alongside NBA All-Star Weekend, and the relationship between sports and style grew even deeper. Not only did athletes maintain their status as front row fixtures, but many took the opportunity to launch their own collaborations and campaigns, host events, and rub elbows with the fashion industry elite.

NBA players in particular capitalized on their time in the Big Apple. Many of the league’s All-Star activities took on a fashion focus, including the first ever NBA All-Star All-Style fashion show. RUSSELL WESTBROOK NAMED CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR TRUE RELIGION SPRING ’15 CAMPAIGN

Russell Westbrook is adding to his long list of off-court style credentials with a new role in the fashion world. True Religion, has tapped the Oklahoma City Thunder guard as the creative director the company’s Spring ’15 apparel campaign. He will also serve as the face of the campaign, modeling the brand’s latest denim designs.

This year, the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend festivities will coincide with Mercedes-Benz Fashion in New York. Westbrook’s new gig will put him at the center of this overlap. According to Style.com:

In between playing in the NBA All-Star game at Barclays Center on February 15 (the same time as the Opening Ceremony show), Westbrook will pop by the True Religion store (conveniently located across the street from Barclays) on February 14 and star in a TV spot that will air during broadcasts of All-Star events and at Madison Square Garden.

WESTBROOK FRAMES TEAMS UP WITH THE NBA ON SPECIAL-EDITION “ALL STAR SERIES” SHADES

The 2015 NBA All-Star game will tip off in New York City, and one of the league’s most fashion-savvy stars is celebrating the festivities with the launch of a special-edition accessory. Russell Westbrook’s signature eyewear brand, Westbrook Frames, has announced an exclusive, limited-edition collaboration with the NBA. The All Star Series collection of shades was designed and curated by Westbrook.

The line is divided into “East Coast” and “West Coast” styles, featuring white and black frames respectively. Both designs are are offered with three different lens color options, in blue, red, and gold. The frames are also adorned with “BKN*NYK” on one side and graphics on the opposite side. The All-Star Series sunglasses retail for $175.00.

MIAMI HEAT LAUNCH “BLACK TIE” UNIFORMS INSPIRED BY FORMAL WEAR

NBA players are notorious for their off-court style statements, and that interest in fashion has now been integrated into on-court apparel. One of the league’s most stylish teams, the Miami Heat, revealed “Black Tie” themed uniforms. The look merges men’s fashion and athletics, in an effort to make players look like they are dressed in formal wear. The gear was created to resemble a deconstructed tuxedo, with black and white hues and color blocking techniques. For details on how the “Black Tie” concept came to life, watch the footage here.

STEPH CURRY IS THE NEW FACE OF EXPRESS

Steph Curry joins the roster of NBA athletes who serve as the face of a fashion company. EXPRESS has signed the Golden State Warriors guard as a brand ambassador. Beginning in March 2015, Curry will appear in campaigns for the retailer.

“We are thrilled to be associated with one of the most respected NBA players of all time. Stephen personifies the hard working ethic and the dream big mindset of our customer,” said David Kornberg, president of EXPRESS. “On and off the court, Stephen fits perfectly with our goal of bringing the best fashion to our customers, allowing them to express their dynamic, individual styles with confidence.”

RUSSELL WESTBROOK CHOOSES GRANT HILL’S OUTFIT FOR NBA TV’S INSIDE STUFF

Russell Westbrook quickly climbed the style ranks to become one of the NBA’s top trendsetters. His sartorial success has transitioned outside of the game, with a range of fashion ventures. Today the Oklahoma City Thunder guard played the role of stylist, picking out Grant Hill’s outfit for NBA TV’s Inside Stuff. During the segment, “From Hoops to Threads,” Westbrook and Hill break down his on-court basketball game and his off-court fashion game.

Within the piece, Westbrook explained his approach to dressing: “I usually start from the kicks and work my way up.” He also spoke about his frustrations when he unable to play, from a fashion perspective:

MATT BARNES PARTNERS WITH MALIBU CLOTHES TO ELEVATE HIS GAMEDAY STYLE

NBA players are always looking for ways to outshine the competition within the league’s style game. Matt Barnes is among the athletes who works closely with a stylist, Brandon Williams, to prepare each of his off-court looks. HUBLOT LAUNCHES KING POWER LOS ANGELES LAKERS TIMEPIECE

Hublot has designed special-edition timepieces for sports teams including the Miami Heat and the Dallas Cowboys. Now the Swiss watchmaker has launched a watch style for the Los Angeles Lakers, dubbed the King Power “Los Angeles Lakers.” Hublot became the Official Timekeeper of the Lakers in January 2013. Despite having created designs for Kobe Bryant, who serves as a brand ambassador, this marks the first signature watch for the team.
