VENUS WILLIAMS TALKS ELEVEN FASHION BUSINESS WITH CBS SUNDAY MORNING
Fashion has been a large part of Venus Williams’ tennis game. Her incredible skills have been matched by a range of unforgettable on-court clothing choices. She branched out to develop her own apparel line, EleVen by Venus, utilizing her sartorial talents and a college degree in fashion.
Runway trends often translate into sportswear designs and that’s the case with Venus’ EleVen styles. The tennis champ has recently been sporting the “Big Serve Dress” on the tournament circuit. The sleeveless outfit features yellow and white diagonal stripes, with a white scoop neck bodice and black accents.
CBS Sunday Morning visited with Williams to discuss her tennis career, as well as her off-court endeavors including as fashion design. The segment takes a look inside Venus’ studio in Jupiter, Florida, where she works with veteran designer, Barbara Clarke Ruiz.
Do you have any rules on what you think looks good in an athletic outfit?
“Well my one rule is, if I wouldn’t wear it, I can’t expect anyone else to. So if I don’t like it, I can’t expect anyone else to like it.”
The clothing line is called EleVen. Where did that name come from?
“EleVen stands for being better than a ten. It just represents bringing your absolute best, no matter what the circumstances are. “
