BEHIND AMAR’E STOUDEMIRE’S RED, LANVIN WEDDING DAY FASHION
The process of planning an NBA player’s post-game wardrobe begins long before the first ball of the season is tipped. Each ensemble is carefully arranged, as stylists source clothing options and tailors develop custom designs. For one of the league’s most fashion-forward stars, Amar’e Stoudemire, the same held true for his wedding day attire.
The New York Knicks forward has become a Fashion Week fixture in recent years. The process of choosing an outfit for his nuptials began when Amar’e attended the Lanvin Spring/Summer 13 men’s runway show as part of Paris Fashion Week. According to T Magazine:
After the show in Paris, he met Lanvin’s creative director, Alber Elbaz, and its men’s-wear designer, Lucas Ossendrijver, and discussed having a made-to-measure suit created for his wedding rehearsal dinner. In New York the following April, he found time during the playoffs to visit the brand’s Madison Avenue boutique to have his measurements taken.
The result was a bold style statement from the fashion house, one that Amar’e reserved for his reception rather than the rehearsal dinner. He wore a fiery red tuxedo paired with a crisp white shirt and black bow tie. Stoudemire also spoke with T Magazine about the process of creating his custom suit. Below are a few excerpts and for the full piece, read on here.
Red is an elaborate, regal color. The whole thing with this wedding is royalty. I want to make sure that my family, [my fiancée’s] family, feels like royalty. If you get a glimpse at the wedding, you’ll see that it’s really a prestige-type event. It’s the type of event that will allow me to wear a red suit.
The N.B.A. draft is going on right now. When I first heard that you had a red suit custom-made, I was worried that you were going to end up looking like Jalen Rose in that infamous red-and-white pinstripe number he wore on the night he was drafted.
[Laughs] When you’re dealing with a suit that’s all red, you want to make sure that you do it right. It has to fit well. You have to go to meetings, fittings, you have to make sure the material is right. It’s a bold color, but it’s classy and classic.
