GAME, SET, STYLE: 2013 AUSTRALIAN OPEN FASHION PREVIEW
The first Grand Slam of the season is underway in Melbourne, giving players an opportunity to debut their 2013 tennis fashions. Apparel trends in the sport continue to mirror those in the fashion world. Bright colors, bold patterns, feminine details, form-fitting silhouettes and light-weight fabrics will play prominently into the styles seen down under and throughout the year.
The tennis world experienced several clothing sponsor shake-ups as players began the new year with new gear. Julia Goerges made the move from Nike to Fila, joining the latter as a new brand ambassador. Both Laura Robson and Andrea Petkovic will now accompany Caroline Wozniacki as new faces on the adidas by Stella McCartney roster. Nicolas Almagro left longtime sponsor, Reebok, to sign with Lotto. Gael Monfils traded K-Swiss for Asiscs. In an interesting move, Tomas Berdych became H&M’s first tennis ambassador. It was recently announced that the Czech player partnered with the brand after leaving Nike. He will wear the clothing both on and off-court and work with H&M to co-design the company’s first ever line of tennis gear.
As the tennis fashion landscape continues to evolve, a player’s style of dress is critiqued almost as much as their style of play. The Australian Open has already showcased a range of edgier fashions from the sport’s top stars. The tournament’s hottest hue is yellow (often with gray accents), with several men and women wearing the color on court. Even Maria Sharapova took notice of the colorful trend:
