JOHNNY “FOOTBALL” MANZIEL TURNS TO HIS UNCLE FOR HEISMAN CEREMONY FASHION ADVICE

For future football players, the NFL Draft typically serves as their “coming out” party as it relates to football and to fashion. In an effort to keep pace with a league full of style-savvy players, these newcomers must now dress the part. Stylists have become commonplace among athletes and with the help of fashion pros, their sartorial games improves with time. But for some college football stars, the Heisman Ceremony gives them an early taste of the spotlight.

While their sense of style isn’t as developed as the professionals, these collegiate standouts still take pride in their fashion choices. Last year’s awards featured a metallic silver suit and blond faux-hawk from LSU’s Tyrann Mathaiu, and the debut of RGIII’s famous Superman-themed socks. For Texas A&M QB, Johnny “Football” Manziel, the pressure was on as a win would make him the first freshman to receive the Heisman Trophy.

As soon as he became the Heisman frontrunner, he began the process of choosing his attire. Thankfully fashion runs in the family for Manziel. His Uncle Harley Hooper quickly became his personal stylist. Hooper owns a men’s clothing store in Tyler, Texas and quickly took over the process of dressing his nephew for the big stage. According to USA Today,

For the Heisman ceremony, Uncle Harley picked out a navy suit in a close-fitting, European fit, because “it’s all about the fit,” he says, “and Johnny can pull it off.” Manziel will wear a marine blue, striped tie with a satin finish. “It’s gonna look really good at night and in front of the cameras,” Hooper says. “I mean, it’s pretty – the girls in the store went crazy.”

Dressed in his navy blue pinstriped suit, which Hooper described as “classic with some flair,” Manziel became the 2012 Hesiman Trophy winner. Below he poses with fellow candidates Collin Klein (Kansas State) and Manti Te’o (Notre Dame). Klein opted for a gray suit, while honoring KSU with a tie and pocket square in purple. Te’o gave a nod to his Hawaiian heritage, accessorizing his dark pinstripe suit with leis.
