HENRIK LUNDQVIST SHOWS MR. PORTER “THE WAY I DRESS”
He’s recognized by many as one of the best-dressed athletes, but Henrik Lundqvist wasn’t always a fashion maven. In a new feature on MrPorter.com, the Swedish goaltender and sports style icon admitted that he wasn’t very into clothes until the age of 16 or 17. Hockey is partly responsible for his sartorial upgrade.
“I started to make my own money as a hockey player which was a big step in being able to buy clothes. I remember my first really big purchase was a leather jacket. It was a big deal. It was expensive for me at the time. I was a little nervous about it, I went for it, I used it for a year and then I threw it out.”
Within the video, “The Way I Dress,” Henrik discusses his fashion evolution. Learning from mistakes and patience were factors that helped him to develop a keen eye for style. And as with many pro athletes, making the move to New York provided additional opportunities for a wardrobe upgrade.
“Coming from Sweden I had a different style compared to a lot of Americans and Canadians. I heard a lot of comments about my style, my suits and my skinny jeans. It was definitely a different look.”
Nowadays Lundqvist’s fashion sense rarely comes into question. Instead, he’s the leader of a fashion-consious New York Rangers team and he’s known for his impeccable suiting style. In “The Way I Dress,” he can be seen getting ready for a night on the town, in an ensemble that included a fitted tux from Yves Saint Laurent, a crisp white shirt from Burberry Prorsum and a bow tie from Lanvin.
