YANKEES & RED SOX CELEBRATE FENWAY’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY WITH RETRO UNIFORMS
To commemorate Fenway Park’s 100th Anniversary, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will wear vintage-inspired uniforms. The first game in baseball’s oldest stadium was played on April 20, 2012, between the Red Sox and the New York Highlanders (later known as the Yankees). The longtime rivals will turn back time during today’s game, when they take the field in retro fashions.
Yankee fans know to expect the team’s iconic pinstripes at home and grays on the road. While the rest of the sports world has embraced a myriad of home, away, alternate, throwback and Sunday jerseys, the Yankees have not followed suit. Although patches are added to commemorate milestones, special events and passings, the Yankee uniform has remained essentially unchanged since 1936. In a rare treat for fans, the Bronx Bombers will don retro gear for today’s game, modeled after the 1912 New York Highlanders uniforms. As part of the design, the “New York” from the front of the gray jersey will be replaced by the iconic “NY” that graces the cap. Navy and maroon stripped stirrups will complete the vintage look.
The Red Sox will also wear their home uniforms from the 1912 season. Both teams will sport custom New Era caps that are old school in style, with modern touches. Fans will see solid white cap on the heads of Red Sox players and a gray cap with a navy brim and the interlocking “NY” logo for the Yankees.
The jerseys and caps are available at MLB.com. Check them out:
