ROSE BOWL UNIFORM SHOWDOWN: OREGON VS. WISCONSIN
Fans knew that Oregon would debut snazzy new uniforms for the Rose Bowl game, but Wisconsin too has revealed a new set of on-field threads to be worn in Pasedena. As the teams battle on the gridiron on January 2nd, Nike and adidas will battle on the fashion front. Oregon is constantly drawing attention due to their ever-changing Nike uniforms and they alter their stylng several times throughout the season. The Badgers don’t play around with their look too often, but head coach Bret Bilema referenced Oregon’s numerous Nike combinations as motivation for his team’s uniform update. Oregon’s all dark-greens will contrast Wisconsin’s all-whites and both teams will unveil sleek new helmet designs come gametime.
Oregon will take the field wearing the latest gear in the Nike Pro Combat system of dress, which incorporates innovative design features and performance benefits. According to the Nike press release, the uniform’s design includes an iridescent sheen similar to that on a mallard’s feathers, larger, bolder numbers that shift in color as they move, and an armored wing design on the shoulders. The helmet features an extra shiny finish called “LiquidMetal black” which has never before been seen on the field. Eleven different materials were used to create the Nike Pro Combat uniform (jersey and pant), and 16 different materials in the complete system of dress. The gear also features the Nike Chain Maille Mesh technology, the ultimate in breathable uniform design. For more details on the technology, read on here.
“Oregon represents the gold-standard when it comes to merging science and innovation with athletic performance and we are excited to continue our partnership with Nike by unveiling the next iteration in uniform innovation for the Rose Bowl” said Oregon Ducks Head Football Coach Chip Kelly. “Nike always starts by listening to the voice of the athlete as they continue to bring the most intuitive technology to the game.”
Unlike Oregon, Wisconsin will make a statement in a simpler ensemble, proving that less can be more when it comes to uniforms. After a Rose Bowl loss to TCU last year, the Badgers will be looking for a victory, which is incoporated into the gear. The team’s new look is inspired by the tradition of the Rose Bowl and the school’s back-to-back trips to Pasadena. The white and red uniforms feature a “Battle Rose” design, including rose petal graphics within the jersey numbers and within the “W” helmet logo. The Badgers’ adidas TechFit baselayer features the “Battle Rose” Motion W logo on the left bicep and “On, Wisconsin!” and “Back-to-Back” on the chest. It’s not a huge departure from the team’s typical gear, yet subtle details such as the rose petal graphic make a great style statement.
“We are very excited to partner with adidas on this new look,” said Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema. “I think the subtle changes we have made truly highlight the tradition of the Rose Bowl while maintaining our classic look. I think the look is something our fans will really embrace and I would like to thank adidas for coming up with something that is unique to Wisconsin and the Rose Bowl.
