Yesterday the Maryland Terps debuted their flashy new gridiron gear for the upcoming season. As of late, fashion shows have been the forum for showcasing new attire with team players serving as models. And if ever a fashion show was needed, this was certainly the time. The Terps debuted 16 different uniform combinations, just a few looks shy of an actual runway collection. The 30-minute show featured a variety of options that the team will have to choose from this season including jerseys and pants in red, black, white and gold, along with two helmet designs.

Oregon is the school most notorious for their on-field attire. As college football’s top fashionistos, the team’s ever-changing Nike uniforms always stir up major style buzz. Maryland’s uniforms were designed by sportswear competitor, Under Armour and whether good or bad, they’re likely to do the same.

“What we want within these uniforms is performance and technology that the world has never seen,” said Under Armour founder/CEO and University of Maryland alumnus Kevin Plank. “We will have the lightest, the strongest, the most durable uniforms that any collegiate football team will have facing off in the 2011 football season.”

So how did they fare? Oregon’s fashions have had the power to help sway recruits and it will be interesting to see if the Terps can do the same. As far as fans are concerned, reactions are of course mixed. Some believe the team is trying too hard to emulate Oregon’s design aesthetic, while others have praised their creativity. The players are pleased with their new looks but choosing the right outfit for each game could be a difficult task. To get some initial styling advice, the team is running a Twitter campaign to allow fans to vote on their favorite combination for the opening game on September 5th.

“I know this: the kids are very, very proud of those uniforms,” said Head Coach Randy Edsall. “I told the captains, you’re the guys that are going to have to decide what we’re wearing because there are too many options for me.

Below is a preview of the team’s new wardrobe and you can check out additional photos here. What do you think?
