DJ3K MERCHANDISE EXTRAVAGANZA
Yankee fans and baseball fans around the world were eagerly awaiting each at-bat, as Derek Jeter came closer to his 3,000th hit. Also anticipiating the historic milestone? Merchandisers. Within minutes of the homerun that inducted Jeter into the 3,000 hit club, emails flooded in from companies like New Era and Steiner Sports, officially releasing their DJ3K gear. Immediately following the big moment, the screen at Yankee Stadium also showed merchandise at stadium shops flying off the shelves.
It certainly helps that Jeter has been one of the most marketable athletes. Prior to the #3000 countdown, the business of selling Jeter gear has always been very good. CNBC’s Darren Rovell spoke with Yankee President, Randy Levine, about Jeter’s value, especially surrounding the DJ3K memorabilia blitz. “There is a licensing deal. We share that for the most part with all 30 teams,” Levine said. You can listen to the full interview here.
Yankee players including Jeter himself, as well as Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada, all capped off the big day in style as they rocked their very own DJ3K gear during the post-game press conference:
Yankee fan or not, it was a unforgettable moment as the Yankee Captain became only the 28th player to garner 3,000 hits and the first to do so with the Yankees. Fans have since been flocking to stores to stock up on a piece of baseball history. Here’s a look at some of the DJ3K offerings:
The most sentimental gear of the bunch is the DJ3K Collection by the Jordan Brand. While these items were made just for Jeter, they’re definitely worth a look. The brand gifted the Yankee shortstop with a commemorative line that included the Jordan Jeter Cut Cleat and Trainer in special colorways, which Jeter wore during yesterday’s game. Also part of the collection were a set of batting gloves and a t-shirt.
“Designed especially for Jeter’s road to 3,000 hits, the Jeter Cut Cleat features a gold Jeter logo, outsole and accents on the upper representing Jeter’s achievement and initiation into the exclusive 3,000 hits club. Prior to his first day of high school, Jeter’s father drew up a mock contract of chores and responsibilities he’d agree to take on with a signature. The contract itself has been replicated on the sockliners of the shoes and is also engraved into the packaging. The woven labels on the back of the tongues include his contract signature “I agree, Derek Jeter” as well as his high school number 13 and current number 2.” [Sole Collector]
But Nike hasn’t forgotten about the fans. They can celebrate the milestone with these DJ3K Nike tees, available in navy and gray for $25, at major sporting retailers.
New Era, the official on-field cap of Major League Baseball, released an authentic hat with a special side patch to mark the milestone. You can pick one up here.
The DJ3K 2-pack of silicone bracelets honor a great milestone and a great cause. $1.00 from the sale of these bands will be donated to Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation. The bracelets retail for $5 and you can find them here.
NY-based company, Steiner Sports, launched a DJ3K memorabilia line. The company is selling one-of-a-kind items that include autorgraphed bats and balls, photos and game-used dirt. You can view the full collection here.
Fans can also visit the MLB Shop for additional tees, hoodies, jerseys and caps and more, commemorating Jeter’s achievement.
