BJORN BORG & JOHN MCENROE TEAM UP TO DESIGN UNDERWEAR
It’s been 31 years since their classic 1980 Wimbledon final, one of the most memorable matches in the game of tennis. Though they’ve spent most of their careers competing with one another, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe have officially become teammates. The longtime tennis rivals have collaborated on the fashion front to create a limited edition collection of underwear. The new line, which will pay homage to the “Golden Age” of the game in the eighties, will be unveiled at Wimbledon this week.
Borg is no stranger to the world of fashion design, in particular, undergarments. He’s been selling skivvies for more than 20 years and his company has since expanded to include sportswear, swimwear, socks and accessories. Bjorn must now share the style spotlight as pieces in the line will include the signatures of both tennis stars. But despite their partnership, there’s still a bit of friendly competition:
“I loved the idea as soon as I heard it. It’s an opportunity to once again team up with John and beat him on new grounds,” Borg jokingly said.
So what can we expect to see? According to McEnroe: “One [style] is colorful and the other is tighty whitey.…I wear short boxers myself.…I think it’s good to express yourself with fashion. I thought the [tennis] clothes we wore back in the day were great. I always liked the short shorts, but nobody seems to agree with me.”
According to WWD, the line will be available in August and will feature 100 pieces of men’s underwear. There will be four styles, two designed by each player. The underwear will be available in 17 countries including Europe, Canada and the U.S. as well as at bjornborg.com.
The collaboration will also include an online charity auction that will auction off memorabilia as well as one hour of ball time with each tennis icon. The auction begins Saturday at bjornborg.com. And 4 percent of sales being donated to the John and Patty McEnroe Foundation.
Will you pick up a pair of their underwear?
